BOARD WATCHERS-MARCH 11, 2008

STONEGATE

· Science  Adoption- The selection process was explained and choices announced:  MacMillan/McGraw Hill for K-6 and Prentiss/Hall for 7-8.  They will be ordered with a delivery date this spring to insure  readiness for the start of school in August.

· Thinking Maps at McKinley School- A $10,000 grant supplied funding for the study and presentation about the feelings about and uses of Thinking Maps by both new and veteran teachers.  The reactions of McKinley teachers were very favorable toward Thinking Maps.

· Expulsion Report by Bob Dunwoody- Students in the process are usually assigned to Independent Study for 6-12 months.  Expelled students are sent to Community School (1), Private School (1), and Alum Rock School District (1).  FMSD has accepted three ARSD students.   Special rules apply to special ed. students.  Gang problems are occurring with students as young as ten, and some problems are racial.

· Budget Crisis- Budget woes will go back and forth until the State Budget is officially adopted (July 1 per state constitution).  SCCOE will review FMSD's budget reflecting $4 million in cuts (based on governor's December budget).   FMSD will hold public planning sessions to comply with cuts.  The entire district hopes the $4 million in cuts is a worst case scenario.   FMSD will revise its budget based on the next proposal from Sacramento which is due May 15.  Dr. Porter hopes to keep the cuts "away" from the classrooms.
